Sharing Light Through Color
I'm an Australian born artist, residing in the Dunedin, NZ. My family lived in the USA from 2010 until 2022.
I'm grateful for the experiences I've been exposed to as a creative abroad and have met wonderful teachers and supportive peers, while being exposed to different materials and ways of thinking about process. This has greatly informed my art practice.
I moved away from daily painting in August 2016 and created art of mixed media in journals for almost 18 months. It was an inspired decision, freeing me up to study and delve deeper into my materials and my personal motivation. I had gotten to know my paint very well, so this was challenging but also liberating.
I discovered inks, acrylic, pens and paper as new tools. I learned how they feel, what marks they made, the sound they make when being used. I reconnected with my reasons for creating and explored new media, this has helped me return to what I dearly love- Painting.
I've been called back to canvas but will continue to journal, one seems to inform the other fluently and I am expanding my means of expression. I have found journaling to be a great tool to engage and ready me up for a canvas.
I made many small 'mixed media' pieces in the process of learning my new vocabulary, ephemeral pieces and sculptural works and spreads in bound journals, dense with mediums. They are my energy stamps. A physical representation of the act of expression.
My art practice consists of working with layers of oil paint and glaze. My paintings are a journey in color frequency, each color having its own unique vibration. Layer by layer, the color is applied until a harmonious frequency is realized. When the colors have found a harmony in their differences, the painting is complete.
Some of the paintings have taken years to be built to this stage, others happened more quickly. Some, thin veils of light others dense and delicious. I delight in it all. Paint is part of my nature.
